If you want to join Oppo you can register your interest at a club opening. Unfortunately this doesn't cross over to Jalopnik. I know the authors of the front page do wonder on here from time to time since they keep sharing posts, so why isn't there a club opening for Jalopnik. Is it really too hard for the authors on the front page to create a monthly post where those left to waste away in the grey zone are given a chance to join in on the conversation.

So mods of Oppo I assume you have some form of direct communication with those in charge of Jalopnik, so could you please put forward this idea to them.

Update: This ain't happening. There is neither the time nor resources for them to check everyone who wants to join. The mods have told me the best solution is to keep posting and hoped to get notice or to just straight up beg.

My advice, just write a post on Oppo about some cars you can buy for whatever reason and make sure it is long, has some pictures & links with an interesting opening, the rest of the article doesn't matter neither does the cars you have selected apparently just make sure it is long and before you know it you have been front paged and can join in on the conversation.

The front page won't do a big Oppo-style club openings post because they don't have the time to go through the comment history of every single person who comments asking to be un-greyed, and un-greying without checking their history is basically opening the door for those people who the grey system was supposed to keep out in the first place. I know it sucks but really posting quality comments and regularly asking on the front page to be un-greyed is probably the most viable option. If you post enough quality that the authors start recognizing your name and associating it with quality then eventually (hopefully) they'll un-grey you.

ETA: There is no direct line Bat-phone from the mods to the staff. Well there is. I mean there might be. Hypothetically. But we can't tell you about that, so there isn't. FORGET I SAID ANYTHING! THIS CONVERSATION IS OVER.

So it's basically a lottery. Not exactly a comforting thought for those stuck in the grey zone.

I assume there is a list for everyone approved to post on Oppo. Can't that list be forwarded over as there are plenty of people here who still grey on the front page. Oppo has stricter guidelines them Jalopnik so vetting would be unnecessary.

This would undermine the whole point of the grey system, which is to keep out undesirable elements who use scripts and what not to post disgusting material to the FP over and over and over again. They even came here to oppo and did it. I don't want those people to get that power back. The grey system is not perfect, but going back to nothing is unacceptable.

That's still over two thousand users they'd have to go through. And there's no way of checking if a commenter is grey or not until they actually track down a comment from said commenter. So basically for every single Oppo they'd have to find a post by that user on the Jalopnik main page, see if the post is grey or not, if it isn't grey see if that's because they're already followed or because the comment was starred, and then follow them if they're not already followed. And then repeat that for Code 3, Truck Yeah, Flight Club, Foxtrot Alpha, Black Flag, Car Buying, Lanesplitter...

Simply put: ain't nobody got time for that.

Also one more thing. I have no idea if this worked or not but I was ungreyed about an hour after I started following Jalpnik so do all the mods/authors get notified when someone follows their blog?

I don't get notified when someone follows Oppo or The Rally Takeover, so I can only assume the staff doesn't get notified when someone follows Jalopnik and you just happened to get lucky.

I got un-greyed by a fellow Oppo just the other day, I still don't know how it works. I post on Jalopnik and everything stays grey.. why bother. This is ridiculous

I used to be able to post on Jalopnik, it's how I spent some time on Oppo and eventually got authorship on Oppo (thanks to a kind sole who approved me). With returning to the grey-scale I hardly ever go over to Jalopnik (mainly when something pops up on FB but I read the article then come over to Oppo). I do drift in between Foxtrot Alpha, Code3, Flight Club, Truck Yeah and here and I'm pretty happy with that.
